William "Bill" Mcmullin

July 27, 1923 — January 10, 2019

“Together Again”

William “Bill” J.P. McMullin, of Brookfield, Ohio, passed into the loving arms of his bride “Bert” at 5:20 PM Thursday, January 10, 2019, while at home and surrounded by his family. He was 95.

Bill was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, on July 27, 1923, a son to Ben B. & Alice M. (Jones) McMullin.

He graduated from Brookfield High School in 1941 with extra-curricular activities of 4 years, both with the band and golf team.

Following high school, Bill worked at the Yankee Run Golf Course and then became a teller at Merchants & Manufacturing National Bank, Sharon, for 18 months before he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in October of 1942. He was called to active duty on January of 1943, and after 16 months of schooling and flight training, he graduated as a Flying Officer in May of 1944. His military occupation specialty became fighter pilot single engine. He deployed to the Pacific Theater being stationed on the island of Luzon with the 3rd Air Commando Group as a P-51 Aviator Pilot. He participated in approximately 60 combat missions, accumulating about 180 hours flying time. When the war ended, he was finally able to return home and was honorably discharged from his duties in May of 1946 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Bertha McIntosh, on June 1, 1946.

There was little doubt he would become deeply involved with the family business at the golf course because of his exposure to the game from the age of 6. His brother Ben and he began construction of the 2nd nine in the fall of 1946. Working long hours, seven days a week, with the help from others and mostly old farm equipment, they managed a formal opening in August of 1947. Bill never officially retired from the business as he enjoyed helping in any way he could. Most days you could find him hanging around the clubhouse. Even in his later years, Bill still played 2 or 3 times a week and from the senior tees scored in the mid 80’s. Bill always said he must have been truly blessed by God for his long and happy life and loving family.

He was a member of the Brookfield United Methodist Church for over 85 years where he served as a faithful steward on various committees and events. In addition, he tended annually to the flowers around the outside of the church. He also belonged to the Golf Course Superintendents Association (50 plus years).

In his spare time, he enjoyed flowers, especially roses, wintering & residing in Sebring, Florida from 1983-2006, and Turf Maintenance. It goes without saying that he was an avid golfer, and a good one at that.

Survivors include: his children, Nancy Jean Wray (Phillip), Masury, Ohio, William Gary McMullin (Dena), Brookfield, and Janet Lynn McMullin, Brookfield; his grandchildren, David Wray, Becky Putnam, Pamela Wray, Morgan, Garrett, & Katie McMullin, and Calli Micaletti; his 8 great-grandchildren; and his extended family too.

He was preceded in death by his “mate and love of his life” for 61 ½ years, “Bert” on January 12, 2008; brothers, James A., Thomas J., & Ben B. McMullin, Jr.; and sisters, Mary Woolfolk & Edna Jamieson.

A time of gathering will be held in Bill’s honor on Thursday, January 17, 2019, from 4-7 PM in the home of Briceland Funeral Service, 379 State Route 7, SE, Brookfield, Ohio 44403.
