Mary "Mir" Chomos

July 16, 1916 — August 10, 2017

Mary “Mir” G. Chomos, of Masury, Ohio, went home on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 10:40 PM while under the care of the Humility House, Youngstown, Ohio. She was 101.

Mary was born at home in Windber, Pennsylvania on July 16, 1916, a daughter to George & Marysa “Mary” (Wasilko) Gonder.

On January 20, 1942, she married Frank J. Chomos and together they started a family. Born to this union were five children: Fran, Rosemary, Jerome, Bruce, and Frank. Mary was proud to stay at home to raise her young family. Furthermore, she worked as a housekeeper for the Sisters at the St. Patrick Convent, Hubbard, Ohio.

Mir was a very active member of the former St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Masury, where she participated in the Altar Rosary Society, as well as the Woman’s Club and Legion of Mary too. In addition, she belonged to the Trumbull County Herb Society, Warren, Ohio.

In her spare time, she enjoyed baking walnut rolls and poppy seed rolls. However, she was best known for her prune and mashed potato pierogis. She loved tending to her floral & vegetable garden, and as a result, she often canned her produce. Moreover, she liked playing church Bingo, attending various fairs, and going to plays with her family.

Survivors include: her children, Fran Pirlo & her husband Tom, Hubbard, Rosemary Chomos, Warren, Ohio, and Frank Chomos, Masury; her grandchildren, Suzanne Pirlo & her husband Oscar Khawli, Justin Saukko & his fiancée Flora Perez, and Rachel Saukko & her partner Brian Sharp; her five great-grandchildren; her sister, Margaret “Peg” Johnson, Brookfield, Ohio; and her extended family too.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, who passed November 20, 1959; by her twin boys, Jerome & Bruce; and by her 12 siblings.

A time of gathering to honor Mrs. Chomos will be held on Monday, August 14, 2017 from 6-8 PM in the home of Briceland Funeral Service, located in the historic district of the village green at 379 State Route 7, SE, Brookfield, Ohio 44403. Her celebration continues with a funeral service at 8:00 PM. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Brookfield Township Cemetery.
