John Hughes

January 8, 1949 — July 13, 2018

John Leslie Hughes, of Austintown, Ohio, passed away at 11:49 PM Friday, July 13, 2018, at Northside Regional Medical Center, Youngstown, Ohio, following a brief illness. He was 69.

John was born in Youngstown, on January 8, 1949, a son to Elmer W. and Garnett L. (Misel) Hughes.

A 1966 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, he proudly enlisted with the U.S. Navy to protect our flag and to help keep our country free. He achieved the rank of Shipfitter Second Class during his obligation and his decorations and citations include the National Defense Service Medal.

Following an honorable discharged from his duties, he found employment with Delphi Packard Electric where he worked with the labor gang until he retired after 30 years of service to the company. He also enjoyed processing deer for Butch’r Holl’r, Hubbard, Ohio, with his best friend, Mike Naples.

He was a member of the United Auto Workers, VFW Post 3767, Hubbard, as well as a former member of the Mahoning Archery Club.

In his spare time, he loved hunting & fishing as the avid outdoorsman he was. His favorite hunting places were West Virginia and North Dakota. He also loved fishing in Canada. However, spending time with his grandchildren brought him the most enjoyment.

Survivors include: his daughters, Cindy L. Jennings (Mark Selby), Hubbard, and Kim A. Rotunna (Rico), Brookfield, Ohio; his grandchildren, Alexandria Jennings, Courtney Jennings, Rico Rotunna, & Casiera Rotunna; his brother, Elmer "Dick" Hughes, Berlin Center, Ohio; his former wife of more than 40 years, Noreen Hughes, Masury, Ohio; his nieces, Laura Simon, Debra (Matthew) Butts; and his great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his twin brother, James Wesley Hughes.

A memorial service will be held in John’s honor on Saturday, July 28, 2018, beginning at 1:00 PM, in the home of Briceland Funeral Service, located on the historic village green at 379 State Route 7, SE, Brookfield, Ohio 44403.
