John Buchanan

July 11, 1941 — April 19, 2016

John Stephen “Pickle Jar” Buchanan, of Masury, Ohio, passed away at home surrounded by friends and loved ones on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. He was 74.

John was born July 11, 1941, in Grove City, Pennsylvania, a son to Albert & Mary Winifred (Headlee) Buchanan, Sr.

He graduated from Hartford High School in 1956 and enlisted in the U.S. Army to defend our flag and to help keep our country free. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the 1st Class Gun Medal (M-60), Expert Medal (Bayonet), 2nd Class Gun Medal (LMG), Expert Medal (BAR), and the Good Conduct Medal. He served 24 months in Germany and was Honorably Discharged at Fort Carson, Colorado.

For 31 years John worked as a truck driver for PI & I Trucking before retiring and was known on the CB Radio as “Pickle Jar”.

He married the former Tammy Ann Cross on Valentine’s Day, February, 14, 1997.

He was a member of the former VFW, Sharon, Pennsylvania; Loyal Order of Moose & Slovenian Home, both of Farrell, Pennsylvania.

John loved being with his family. He was famous for his chili, loved camping, boating, fishing, golfing, baking, working puzzles, playing cards & Wii. He constantly kept busy doing something.

Our John was always there to lend a helping hand. He had a silly sense of humor and created nicknames for everyone. He liked telling “Prospector Pete” stories at night around the camp fire which always made us laugh. He had a loving heart and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

We will forever carry your memory in our hearts. He is survived by: his wife, Tammy; his children, Patrizia Bettoli, Salisbury, North Carolina, Tanja Buchanan, Charlotte, North Carolina, Timothy Fisher, Brookfield, Ohio, and Joshua Costes, Masury; his grandchildren, Sela & Lucia Bettoli; Erica & Erin Franke; Allen, Brent, Cody, & Kayleen Fisher; and his siblings, Albert "Abby" Buchanan, Jr., Richard "Dick" Buchanan, Lawrence "Larry" Buchanan, James "Jim" Buchanan, Margaret "Peggy" Craig, and Kathleen "Kathy" Pflug.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his sisters, Winifred "Winnie" Johnson & Marjorie "Margie" Johnson.

A time of gathering to honor John’s life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016, from 1-4 PM at Briceland Funeral Service, located on the historic village green at 379 State Route 7, SE, Brookfield, Ohio 44403. He will be laid to rest in Brookfield Township Cemetery.
