Joe Tarkanick, of Brookfield, Ohio, heard the words “well done good and faithful servant” at 8:12 pm Friday, August 21, 2015, as he passed from this life to eternal life while a patient at the Sharon Regional Hospital following a brief illness. He was 93.
Joe was born February 17, 1922, at home in Brookfield, a son to Joseph & Mary (Pollock) Tarkanick.
A 1940 graduate of Hartford High School, he found employment at Westinghouse Electric Company, Sharon, Pennsylvania. While he was working, he saw a co-worker named Ann Leavens who happened to catch his eye. A short time later, they fell in love and married on November 11, 1944. Together they started a family and born to this union were three children, Joseph, Rose, & Robert.
He supported his family by working as an Electrical Tester for Westinghouse until his retirement after 40 years of service.
Joe was very active in his community. He was a member of the St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Masury, Ohio; a 3rd Degree Knight of Knights of Columbus, Council #3984, Masury; Past-President Westinghouse Retirees; Past-President Valley View Association; Brookfield Historical Society, where he had recently been recognized with a certificate as the oldest historian; Friends of the Brookfield Library; and was a Published Author: "Brookfield That Was" - Volumn 1 & 2.
In his spare time, he enjoyed music, photography, fishing with his sons, camping, traveling with his wife, and gardening.
He is survived by: his wife of 70 years, Ann; his children, Joseph J. Tarkanick & his wife Elaine, Rose A. Axtell & her husband Sam, both of Brookfield, and Robert P. Tarkanick & his wife Sandy, Hermitage, Pennsylvania; his nine grandchildren; and his nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his brother, Stephen Tarkanick; and his sisters, Margaret Lukasko & Helen Tomczak.
A time of gathering to honor Mr. Tarkanick will be held from 4-7 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Briceland Funeral Service, LLC, 379 State Route 7, SE, Brookfield, Ohio 44403. In accordance to his wishes, a private service will be held the following day.
As suggested by his family, material contributions can be made to the Brookfield Historical Society (or) the Brookfield Library c/o the funeral home.
