Betty Jane Burdette of Brookfield, Ohio, peacefully passed in her sleep at 4:10 AM Tuesday, April 2, 2019, while a patient in O’Brien’s Memorial Nursing Home, Masury, Ohio, following a period of declining health. She was 96.
Betty was born at home in Sharon, Pennsylvania on March 31, 1923, a daughter to Frank S. & Edna (Blumer) Boston.
She was a 1941 graduate of Hartford High School, where she participated on the ladies basketball & softball teams, earning the nickname of “Slugger”.
She met her love, Louis W. “Luke” Burdette at a dance in the Hartford Grange Hall and they married on September 12, 1942. They raised two children and would spend the next 69 years together.
During WWII, Betty worked as a Navy Certified Welder as a genuine “Rosie the Riveter”. She turned that vocation into a career having worked for companies such as: G.A.T.X., Ernest Incorporated, and Howell Industries, before she officially retired.
She was a member of the Brookfield United Methodist Church.
In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to radio cooking shows, collecting cookbooks, gardening, mowing her grass, and weed-whacking. She loved reading books about the Amish and thoroughly enjoyed going to garage sales. However, she had a unique way with working crossword puzzles.
Survivors include: her son, Jim Burdette & wife Judi, Brookfield; her daughter, Merriam Burdette, Palm Harbor, Florida; her grandchildren, Jamie Burdette & his wife Molly, and Melissa Kerr & her husband Dax; her six Great-Grandchildren; her one Great-Great-Grandson; her sister, Julia V. Neely, Hubbard, Ohio; and her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Luke, who died October 12, 2011; and by her siblings, Helen Ruth Ebert, Dorothy Stone, & Jim Boston.
A time of gathering to honor Betty will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2019, from 3 until 5 PM at the Brookfield United Methodist Church, 6951 Grove Street, Brookfield, Ohio 44403. A memorial service will immediately follow at 5 PM.
