Arlene Wray

Arlene Jewell Wray, of Brookfield, Ohio, passed away around 2 PM on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, while a patient in the Liberty Arms Health Care Center, following a period of declining health. She was 91.

Arlene was born June 5, 1923, in Griffithsville, West Virginia, the youngest daughter of twelve children to Mack & Elsie (Stanley) Stowers.

She attended a one room schoolhouse while in West Virginia and received an exceptional education. A short time later, she became pen pals with Seaman 2nd Class Clarence L. Wray, by way of her brother Russell, while he was in the service. She eventually fell in love with Clarence and they exchanged vows on flagday June 14, 1947.

During the WWII, she worked as a telephone operator and as “Rosie the Riveter”.

However, her family was her life. She was proud to be and loved being a homemaker.

She is survived by: her children, Phillip M. Wray & his wife Nancy, Masury, Ohio, & Dr. Clarence L. Wray, Jr., & his wife Alice, Burghill, Ohio; her 9 grandchildren; her 9 ½ great-grandchildren; and her brother, Lee Stowers, Masury.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Clarence, who passed March 10, 2009; by her siblings, Clarence, Eugene, Mack, Clinton, Russell & Orville Stowers, Ruth & Mary Jane Sowards, Inez Brohard, & Nettie Adkins.

A time of gathering to honor Arlene’s life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015, from 10-12 PM at the Corner House Christian Church, 6954 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Hubbard, Ohio 44425. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 12 noon. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Riverside Cemetery, Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.
