Alfred "Smitty" L. Schmidt

Alfred “Smitty” L. Schmidt, of Masury, Ohio, was received in the loving arms of his bride in Heaven on Thursday, March 28, 2024, following a brief illness. He was 96 when he passed at Shepherd of the Valley, Howland Township, while surrounded by his family.

Alfred was born at home in Brookfield, Ohio, on May 12, 1927, a son to Alfred G. & Minnie I. (Pearson) Schmidt.

He was a 1945 graduate from Brookfield High School and enlisted with the U.S. Navy during WWII to help defend our flag and to keep our country free. He was a Carpenter’s Mate third class assigned aboard the USS PCS 1450, a minesweeper, and the USS PCE 872, a patrol craft vessel. His decorations and citations include the WWII Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon. He was honorably discharged from his duties on August 9, 1946.

Following his return home, he married a gal by the name of Shirley M. Sherman on November 8, 1947, and they held hands for the next 72 years until her passing on March 21, 2020.

He retired from Sawhill Tubular after dedicating 45 years to the company as a mill wright.

Al was an active member of the Central Christian Church, Hubbard, Ohio; Over the Hill Gang, where he was a past-president; Sawhill Retirees; VFW Post #3767, Hubbard; and a volunteer at the Buhl Club of Sharon.

In his spare time, Smitty enjoyed traveling, playing cards, wood working, making crafts, and gardening.

Survivors include: his children, Jeffrey L. Schmidt (Ginny), of Vienna, Ohio, and Denise A. Brannon (Reed), of Elk Mt., Wyoming; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons; 3 nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; son, Russell A. Schmidt; and by his sisters, Katherine "Katie" McKelvey and Ruthea Gault.

A memorial service to celebrate both Alfred & Shirley will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 11:00 AM, in the Central Christian Church, 44 S. Main Street, Hubbard, Ohio 44425. Family and friends may pay their respects one hour prior to the service from 10-11 AM.
